School Year Events For Area Students with I/DD

Special Olympics

The Arc serves as the coordinator of Special Olympics events for area school students, ages 8 – 21.  The largest of these events is the Special Olympics Calhoun/Cleburne Counties Athletics Events, held each Spring, although competitions and training in basketball, bocce, bowling, swimming and skating as well.

Kids Invitational Fishing Classic

The Arc is member of the Kids Invitational Fishing Classic Committee, which organizes a fishing tournament on the first Thursday of May for some 200 students with intellectual disabilities in school systems across Calhoun and Cleburne Counties. Now past its 15th year, this tournament utilizes the cooperation of hundreds of volunteers from civic groups, student groups,  businesses, non-profits and political organizations.

Christmas Parties

Each December The Arc hosts Christmas parties for students with intellectual disabilities in school systems across Calhoun and Cleburne Counties. Participants at each party, one for high school and middle school students, the other for elementary school students, receive lunch and a individual gift bag delivered by Santa Claus himself.

Scottish Rite Masons Shoe Program

The Arc coordinates with representatives of the local Scottish Rite Masons to provide shoes for some 25 – 30 school-aged students over the holiday season. This program is subject to the level of participation of the Masons in their state shoe program.
